The 1904 Limerick Boycott
Limerick's Jewish community was small and poor, Lithuanian pedlars mostly. In January 1904 a Redemptorist priest, Father John Creagh, preached them into ruin, accusing them from the pulpit of usury and dishonest trading, none of it true. Arthur Griffith lent the campaign his name.
Local Catholics stopped trading with Jewish merchants and stopped paying what they owed them. The violence came quickly after, reaching even the family of a future Lord Mayor of Cork, Gerald Goldberg.
Thirty-two families were ruined. Most of Limerick's Jews left the city for good.
